Days of Awe in Song and Dance

Evocative Piyutim and Selichot from the ancient Yemenite Diwan, Ladino songs from the Balkans, and modern Israeli versions of High Holiday liturgy woven together with story, and interpretative sacred dances. The evening will culminate in participatory song and dance.

Featuring,
Rachel Valfer Sills - Oud (Middle Eastern lute), vocals
Eliyahu Sills - Ney (Turkish reed flute)
Yinon Darwish - Traditional Yemenite vocals,  kemancheh (spike fiddle), guitar
Dror Sinai - Vocals, percussion
Miriam Peretz -  Dance

Experience the depth and power of the high holidays in a moving and heart-felt collaboration from these masters of traditional Eastern song and dance. The evening will evoke the longing and prayer for renewal that are at the heart of the Days of Awe, from a novel expressive and interpretative standpoint that is nonetheless based in Jewish traditions from around the East.

 The Ecstatic Soul

A night of ecstatic poetry and sacred music with

Michael Meade and the Qadim Ensemble

Seattle, WA - 7:00 pm
All Pilgrims Church - 500 Broadway E

$15.00

You are invited to an evening of ecstatic poetry and sacred music, a combined song that voices the longings of the heart and whispers the nature of the soul. In dark and troubled times ancient peoples turned to the poets and mystics, not to escape reality, but to find solace, understanding, and inspiration. The mystics say that something that turns within us helps to make the world turn. They say that there is a "light seed grain inside; you fill it with yourself, or it dies." Come fill yourself with poetry and music.

Mythologist and storyteller Michael Meade will weave ecstatic poetry with ancient "wisdom tales", while The Qadim Ensemble offers devotional music of the Middle East. Qadim celebrates the rich spiritual heritage found in traditional Arabic, Jewish, Turkish Sufi, Greek, and Moroccan music.

Interweaving dance, live music, poetry and sacred text; the stories of three visionary women gather communal waters from the universal well. The stories of Mary, Maryam, and Miriam from the Christian, Muslim, and Jewish traditions illumine the commonality and interconnectedness of these three traditions through a shared story and archetype. Drawing on traditional expressive arts and ritual, contemporary theater and dance technique, emotionally engaging the audience in a rich image of a shared heritage.

In dark and troubled times, ancient peoples turned to the poets and mystics to find solace, understanding, and inspiration. Those old "knowers" knew that whenever we are lost or "at a loss", the soul is nearby. For the soul finds its way by touching darkness and releasing the hidden light. "Allow dark times to season you," says Hafiz. Rumi advises that somehow "your own desire will find an opening."

You are invited to an evening of ecstatic poetry and sacred music, a combined song that voices the longings of the heart and whispers words of Dark Wisdom that have encouraged the life-seekers for centuries.
